New theme & BW Online Burner Update

Had a hunt for a new theme for the blog yesterday and decided upon this one - Scruffy 1.1 by Cobus Bester, let me know what you think of it!

One cool feature is the addition of some custom paragraph styles:

Flat sold!

A couple of days ago Bec got the brilliant news that the sale of her flat had been completed, contracts exchanged and money in the bank :)

Woo-hoooo! That’s one big bit of stress out of our lives, thank god for that.

Josh is getting steadier on his feet now, staggering all over the place like a tiny drunk, ever so funny to watch. He’s also become very adept at getting down from our bed and climbing on and off the chair in his room and his little chairs downstairs.

Weather permitting we’re off to St Albans tomorrow to meet Ben and enjoy the Little Chill music festival, cool.

Lunch by the Thames & Hayseed Dixie

Yesterday we met Simon, Alix and Sophie at a pub by the Thames in Chertsey as they’re over here for a couple of weeks from Oz. Josh loved the pub, walking/staggering round the place, particularly enjoying being picked up to press the buttons on the slot machines…

Had a nice lunch, caught up a little with our Aussie mates then had a lovely stroll by the River in the sunshine.

Lyric of the evening award goes to the line “I married a Moonshiners Daughter. She made me liquor all night long.” :)

Last night I took Graham to the Alban Arena to see Hayseed Dixie for his birthday. Great fun they were too, playing such remastered (bluegrass stylee) classics as Warpigs, Fat Bottomed Girls, Holiday (by Green Day), Ace of Spades and Highway to Hell to name a few.

After the gig we strolled up to the clock tower, sat outside an Italian restaurant and snacked, drank & chatted while watching the St Albans nightlife go by. Brilliant!

Josh Walking!!!

Josh has moved from cruising along furniture to joining the walking unaided world!

He’s been very close for weeks now but it seems he’s finally got his balance pretty much sorted. Bec took him to visit Annete & Louisa on Monday and as Weezer can now walk it must’ve motivated him! Aparently they were chansing each other all over the place, nice one son. Just goes to show there’s nothing like a lady to get a fella motivated into action! :)

Gameforce July 2008 - Arkham Horror

Went to the monthly Gameforce club and played Arkham Horror for the first time. Unfortunately Iain didn’t get the message that the event was starting at noon and arrived at 2pm, too late to join our game :( Instead he met the developer of Starblazer Adventures (cool!) and played some Civ style Grek epic boardgame (and lost….).

So, to Arkham! 6 brave (or foolish) souls set out to rid the town of Arkham from the evil horror Ithaqua. Only David (who led the game) and another player had played before, the other 4 of us were noobs.

I played the Psychologist who, due to a complete lack of any weapons or spells and with a number of horrors camping out on the street, spent most of the game sat in the Newspaper Office being driven mad by ink stains, in Arkham Asylum being set upon by crazy inmates or at the Hospital healing my colleagues. I finally did something exciting by joining the Silver Twilight club and then we won!

Another player (Mandy, the Researcher) started with a Tommy Gun and kicked butt big time. Sister Mary clinched the game for us though with an epic stroll through another dimension to close the last & only gate left on the board - 6 gates sealed = game over Ithaqua!

We then went on to beat Ithaqua up to show us the end game should the ancient Old One awaken. I say we beat him up, it was mainly Tommy Gun Girl and Sister Mary - my measly 4 Fight dice weren’y doing much…

All in all it was a fun game, a bit hectic with 6 players though and looks like it has a set-up time bordering on Axis & Allies levels… Still, I’m looking forward to playing it with Iain - 2 characters each should be pretty enjoyable.

Spotty boy

Josh has ‘Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease’ with lots of little spots over his arms, legs, hands and face :(

Thankfully he’s still his usual happy little self and they don’t seem to be causing him any discomfort. 3 days into it we reckon he’s got through the worst bit and is on the mend. Ah well, guess it’s all part of building his immune system…

A smattering of news

  • Dad’s back home recovering from his triple bypass, walking here and there and will hopefully be able to recuperate without too much stress from his lovely grandchildren!
  • I went to the D&D 4th Edition launch party held at the London Dungeons. Quite good fun, very atmospheric. The game demo itself wasn’t too bad, basically a series of fights on the way to rescue a couple of kids. We did pretty well in that all the party (plus rescued kids) made it out of the collapsing mausoleum alive. The table next to us almost had a TPK…
  • Josh is sooo close to walking. He can happily walk along with something to hold onto or push, like his high chair, the washing basket and his trike. He’s also climbing stuff - most recently the chair in his room. As of yesterday he can now clamber onto the chair with no help! Today a chair, tomorrow a solo up a Scottish sea stack in the wet!
  • Saw Iron Man & The Hulk at the flicks with some bloke called Stu who used to work with me at Total (he’s dead to us now!). Both very enjoyable, with the inclusion of some of their respective signature moves plus the Hulk saying “HULK SMASH!”, great stuff. Next up on the Supers front - Hancock (crap name, cool looking movie) & HellBoy 2
  • With the aid of nearbygamers.org I’ve got me a game of Burning Wheel! It’ll be bi-weekly, with Drew & Jen, a married couple who live 5 mins drive away & have a 9 month girl, Saskia. Drew’s had the books for about a year but never played. Here’s a wiki page detailing the campaign. Premise is a pair of Elves (one old & wise like Giles from Buffy, the other a naive Song Sword Princess who only knows the happy hippy Elven lands) travel back to the mainland populated by humans, a smattering of Elves (The Protectorate), some angry Spirit Guardians and a shed load of humans mutated by the Twisted Death plague into vicious Orcs. Then there’s the Song Stones that are the only thing protecting humanity from the Twisted Death and that have started to fail… Check out the wiki page for more details!
  • Progress on the online character burner continues. I’m trying to thrash out user registration, saving then loading characters and adding the odd extra bit when I find time. I’m pleased with the fancy wiki formatting - ideal for posting characters to the Web for the Burning Song Stones game :)
  • Bec’s had some lovely photos taken of her by a place called For Your Eyes only as her anniversary present to me, but heh, they’re for our eyes only so that’s all I’m saying ;-)

Good news x 3

Dad’s heart bypass went well - he had a triple in the end as what would have been the 4th bypass turned out to be a blocked stent they didn’t have notes on (which they unblocked & replaced). Just have the days/weeks of recovery to get through now.

Cormac’s latest MRI shows no sign of any return of his tumour - excellent news!

my recent MRI results came back with the doctor reporting no change from the last scan, which is very good news indeed, and we are very happy that all the work I do on myself continues to get the desired result. It may take another 3 - 7 years for all the toxins to fully leave my system, and the damage left by the tumour will simply need to be “re-routed ” to other sections of my grey cells to restore full functionality. I am beginning a brain specific diet that will enhance my noggins recovery time and hopefully undo the “chemo-brain” damage done over time. I consider myself most fortunate.

And lastly, Jake has returned home after being AWOL for 3 weeks. He’s a little skinner and has a dry nose but other than that seems OK. Our family is complete again!

Lovely :-)

Jake missing

Jake was last seen on the 20th, 2 days ago. He’s disappeared before, but only for 24 hours so we’re getting pretty worried. Come home soon Jake, we all miss you, even the ginger one!
